Contributed September 28, 2001 by Wayne Pardy Electrical Substation Inspection Checklist Yard Is the substation fencing in good repair (no holes in fence/excavations under fence)? Are all gate locks secured and in good working order? Are all grounding mats covered (i.e. no wire protruding)? Is there any unused equipment or material stored in the yard? Is there any garbage / refuse etc. on the ground? Are there clear warning / hazard signs posted in appropriate places (fences, buildings)? Yard (Bus, Switches and Transformers) Are all disconnect switches securely locked (and tagged where appropriate)? Are all equipment labels legible and in good repair (e.g. switches, OCBs)? Does an overhead visual check of the substation bus reveal any problems (broken insulators, cracked lightning arrestors, etc.)? Are there any oil leaks visible from potheads, transformers or metering tanks? Does a visual inspection of transformers reveal any problems? Are any alarms showing on transformers (i.e. gas)? If lines / equipment are out of service, are all devices securely locked and tagged? If lines / equipment are out of service, are all devices securely grounded? Buildings Are the metal clad building(s)in good repair? Are the metal clad building(s) entrance securely locked? Is there any visible damage to building structures (leaks, holes, tears, etc)? Is there appropriate washing facilities available? Are there regular inspections of the building to ensure compliance with housekeeping standards? Enclosed Equipment Are the grounding sticks secured and stored properly? Are the grounding sticks in good repair (clamps functional, no cracks, etc.)? Are OCB rack-out motors stored and accessible? Are all breaker indicator bulbs working? Are all OCB cabinet doors working, locked and in good repair? Meters, Protection Relays & Alarms Have all demand meters been recorded and reset? Have targets/fault indicators been recorded and reset? Overall Assessment Does the overall condition of the substation facilities and yard meet standards? Does the overall condiction of the substation meet regulatory standards Is the general public adequately warned and protected from entry to the yard and facilities? Is the regular maintenance program effective in helping the substation meet required standards?
