CAREER
TIPS FOR AUDITORS
You Can Improve Your
Written Communication Skills
by Robbie Miller Kaplan
When asked, employers will tell you that effective written
communication skills are one of the most sought after skills in
today's workplace. And yet many employees find writing a daunting
task. The following suggestions can greatly improve your writing
skills:
1. Create a writing plan by preparing an outline of what to include
in a writing project.
2. Take your first step by writing a draft. Don't worry about word
choice or content as that will improve during the process.
3. Edit your writing for word choice and redundancies using a
thesaurus or synonym dictionary. Check for correct punctuation and
grammatical usage using a grammar book as a guide.
4. Your writing can always be improved so edit, revise, and re-edit
your work.
5. Set a plan to improve your vocabulary by using a dictionary to
look for the meaning of unfamiliar words, completing crossword
puzzles, and playing word games.
6. Read every chance you get; the more you read, the more you will
expand your vocabulary and increase your awareness of effective
writing.
7. Expand your reading selection; read the newspaper, magazines,
journals, fiction books, non- fiction books, and biographies.
8. Practice your writing as often as possible. Write notes and
letters to family members, friends, and colleagues.
9. Volunteer to taking on writing projects at work. Ask colleagues
and supervisors to give you input on how to improve your writing.
10. View writing as a skill, one that you acquire through practice
and effort.

tips from Robbie Miller Kaplan, author of Sure-Hire Resumes and Resume
Shortcuts. If you find these tips useful then check out the books! For

Productivity
Tip:
The Power of Many!
Audit discussion lists provide you with the opportunity to network
and share with your peers. While some mailing lists are meant only to
provide you with a one-way stream of information other are
interactive. These knowledge resources allow you to keep current as
well as provide assistance when you have no where else to turn.
For more
productivity tips order a copy of The Auditor's
Guide to Internet Resources 2nd Edition from the IIA.
Internet Resources for
the Traveling Auditor
Auditors routinely travel to work assignments on site. For many
auditors these assignments are local but for others out of town travel
is a requirement of the job. There are a large number of auditors who
conduct audits of field operations, branch offices, or remote sites.
The Internet is a valuable place to tap into resources for the auditor
on the go and it provides a host of opportunities for traveling
auditors if they know where to look. I have compiled a list
of sites that AuditNet users can refer to when making business or
pleasure travel plans.
The first resource that comes to mind would be travel services such
as airline, car rental and lodging reservations. All major airline Web
sites allow travelers to research flight schedules, cost and reserve
tickets. You can also select your seat, identify food service, see
what in-flight movie is playing and more. Renting a car and selecting
a hotel close to your remote work assignment are also as facilitated
by the Web. Hotel sites usually provide details about the rooms and
amenities including fitness centers, which are very important for many
audit travelers. (Note: Always check out the Residence
Inn locations as this helps to support AuditNet). Once you have
decided on your flight and hotel arrangements use Mapquest
or one of the other mapping services for turn-by-turn directions from
the hotel to the work location. Confirm the directions received via
one of the online mapping sites, as they sometimes may not provide the
best route. Use the Internet to locate restaurants that are close to
the work location. You can even get restaurant reviews for major
cities on the Zagat site. Several
days before your departure date log on to one of the weather
sites to determine local conditions. This may help you when
packing in case you need long underwear or an umbrella.
Your laptop will come in handy for keeping in touch with
headquarters or your home office. E-mail is a lot less expensive than
long distance calls.
Continued at the top of next column
Remember to check how much local calls are from your hotel room
as many hotels have instituted minimum charges for toll free and
other calls. Some hotels even use metered calling for local
calls so an extended data call can be quite expensive. You
should be able to check out the hotel policy via their Web site
before you arrive.
If you are going on an extended stay you might want to check
your professional association for the
local chapter Web site. It is possible that there may be a
monthly meeting that you can attend for some CPE
and peer companionship rather than watching a pay per view
movie. If you would rather explore the city as a tourist then
the Internet should provide you with local happenings, sites of
interest and other things to do to while away your free hours.
Reading your local paper,
checking your email, receiving and sending faxes are just a few
of the additional activities that you can do on the road. If you
have other ways that you use the Internet as an audit tool, send
them to editor@auditnet.org
and we'll share them with AuditNet readers.
AuditNet Adds
New Search Technology
After repeated problems with the AuditNet site search engine
I decided to try some new alternatives. I incorporated
Searchbutton.com and the AuditNet Google
Personal Search engine on the AuditNet site. Searchbutton.com provides
powerful search technology and reporting that should improve
searching the AuditNet site. I would appreciate any feedback on
these new search alternatives.

Illegal and unauthorised software is still a hot topic, not very
well
managed, and is one of the most underdone areas in terms of tools and

of
risk. Add to this problems created by downloaded picture and sound
files and
the risk expand very rapidly.
