The year 2000 will be remembered for its bountiful
economic prosperity along with the flood of year-end downsizing and
lay offs. It's crucial that we learn from these dynamic times the
importance of taking charge of your work life. Career planning is
essential as no one is more interested in your career success and
future progression than you.
Have you established long-term goals? Do you know
where you'd like to be in two, three, or five years? The start of a
new year is a perfect time for introspection.
Here are some suggestions to start the planning
process:
1. Do you enjoy the work you do? Is the environment
or industry challenging?
Prepare a self-assessment to identify what you like and dislike about
your work and areas you would like to pursue. Sometimes, progression
can be as simple as changing industries or employment sectors.
2. Research your career field to determine future
opportunities. Evaluate educational requirements and explore training
or formal educational opportunities that will stimulate you as well as
qualify you for new positions.
3. Seek out special projects and task forces within
your current organization. You'll expose yourself to new opportunities
in different parts of the organization when you establish
communication channels with new colleagues from other divisions and
departments.
4. Affiliate yourself with professional
organizations. A circle of colleagues with different backgrounds and
experiences exposes you to lateral and promotional options outside
your organization. Colleagues provide information and valuable support
that helps facilitate career moves.
5. Get involved with your community. Volunteer your
expertise at the library, the local school, the community center,
fraternal organizations, or wherever you please. You'll provide needed
community support and you'll benefit too through an expanded network
and the creative stimulation fueled by using your skills in new
environments.
Set yourself simple goals to build a solid
foundation for career success in 2001. Enjoy the process!

Productivity
Tip:
How do you Measure
Success?
One of the ways that audit departments measure how
they are doing is by asking clients or customers to rate their audit
work. Many progressive audit organizations have found exit surveys or
questionnaires useful. There are a variety of questions that may
be asked to help measure productivity and improve future audit
performance. In order to get an accurate read using these is to make
sure that they are provided to ALL customers upon completion of the
audit. For examples of surveys used by some audit shops check out the
surveys contributed to AuditNet at the Audit
Surveys page.
Reminder when you are leaving a message in the
guestbook. Remember to leave your e-mail address if you are
asking a question that you want me to respond to.
Thanks for your support!

Enterprise Resource
Planning
KPMG Experience with Scheduling Software
To maximize potential revenue and perform to
clients' expectations, it is critical that consulting firms maximize
the utilization of available employees. The scheduling of resources
presents a major challenge to managers. KPMG Consulting, one of the
world's leading business consulting firms, uses a critical software
program to assist its managers in effectively utilizing its personnel.
RETAIN, a software package designed specifically for
resource planning, incorporates a flexible database for resource and
task details with a computer generated wall chart presentation. Thus,
managers have access to a computer presentation that allows an
immediately visible, simple to use planning system. Additionally,
because RETAIN incorporates a flexible database of charge rates that
integrates job costing with staff planning, the manager can easily
project both forward utilization and revenue.

AuditNet Adds
New Search Technology
After repeated problems with the AuditNet site search engine
I decided to try some new alternatives. I incorporated
Searchbutton.com on the AuditNet site. Searchbutton.com provides
powerful search technology and reporting that should improve
searching the AuditNet site. I would appreciate any feedback on
this new search alternative.
Upgrading to Windows 2000? If so, then auditors need to be aware of
the following.
Firstly, like earlier versions comes the requirement to REGISTER
the product direct with Microsoft. However, after 50 instances of
being loaded it will cease to operate WITHOUT a registration key
obtained direct from Microsoft. Organizations that fail to register
will find the software will not function without the current
registration key.
Secondly, for sites that are part of the Microsoft Open License
Program, then you must VERIFY the numbers of existing licenses that
are owned. For
this to take place you must conduct a hardware and software AUDIT to
verify the license count.
If the count of software installed exceeds the licenses you own,
then you need to pay the fees to license all the prior versions of
both operating and
installed software BEFORE you get to upgrade to Windows 2000!
