CAREER
TIPS FOR AUDITORS
12 Steps for
Successful Transitions
by Robbie Miller Kaplan
If you are like most workers, your job or career largely defines
your identity. You may be a brother, daughter, wife, spouse, or mother
but, you most likely describe yourself as an accountant, auditor, or
financial professional.
What happens to that identity when your are laid off or if it is
time to retire, retool, change industries, or redefine your career
direction? Whether you have 5 or 26 years invested in your career, it
is easy for your self-esteem to take a pounding in times of change and
transition. The following 12 steps should help you successfully
weather these times.
1. Understand and accept that no matter how accomplished,
experienced,
connected, or skilled, everyone feels discomfort and insecure during
transitions.
2. Conduct research using the Internet and periodicals to define
which jobs
match your goals and objectives.
3. Browse through organizational Web sites and career/employment
sites to
locate exact openings.
4. Create a list of key words located in job descriptions paying
particular
attention to the desired and preferred qualifications. As you continue
to
read and research, add to your key word list.
5. Write a description of the job you desire incorporating all the
key words
and requirements.
6. Prepare a resume detailing how your qualifications match the job
requirements. Use books such Sure-Hire Resumes, Second Edition and
Resume
Shortcuts to guide you through the writing process.
7. Research likely organizations and control your search by
applying to
organizations that appeal to you.
8. If your self-esteem has plummeted and you are doubting your
credentials,
get some professional help from a career or job search expert. Let
them
review your credentials and help you prepare steps to get your search
moving.
9. Pull your network into play and get support from colleagues,
friends, and
family members. Remember to choose wisely.
10. Maintain all your career/job search information in a spiral
notebook.
Keep it updated. You'll feel more comfortable and secure as your
notebook
fills.
11. Set a weekly appointment with yourself to review your search
progress.
Take a quiet moment at home or treat yourself at a coffee house or
local cafe.
12. Evaluate the progress in your spiral notebook; make notes of
your
progress and set weekly goals.
Remember - accomplished professionals successfully make transitions
- you
will too. Good luck!

Productivity
Tip:
What's the Best
Search Methodology?
Searching for audit related information is a challenge even for the
most net savvy auditor. I have found one of the best methods for
finding audit related information is to find the best audit site and
then use their own site-oriented search engine. AuditNet provides you
with a new way to perform a comprehensive search. AuditNet's
Personal Search engine from Google allows you the option to search the
entire Internet or just search the AuditNet site. Obviously a site
search is limiting but it is also very focused and returns results
much quicker. I use the same technique when I am looking for
information on other sites. A site specific search engine provides a
quick, easy and focused search of a site. Take the new search
feature out for a test drive by going to www.auditnet.org/search.htm.
Try it, you'll like it!

productivity tips order a copy of The Auditor's
Guide to Internet Resources 2nd Edition from the IIA.
Enterprise Resource
Planning
KPMG Experience with Scheduling Software
To maximize potential revenue and perform to
clients' expectations, it is critical that consulting firms maximize
the utilization of available employees. The scheduling of resources
presents a major challenge to managers. KPMG Consulting, one of the
world's leading business consulting firms, uses a critical software
program to assist its managers in effectively utilizing its personnel.
RETAIN, a software package designed specifically for
resource planning, incorporates a flexible database for resource and
task details with a computer generated wall chart presentation. Thus,
managers have access to a computer presentation that allows an
immediately visible, simple to use planning system. Additionally,
because RETAIN incorporates a flexible database of charge rates that
integrates job costing with staff planning, the manager can easily
project both forward utilization and revenue.
Read an interview with Mr. Peter Andrew, Director of
UK Consulting Resource Management, KPMG Consulting. In the interview,
Mr. Andrew describes the challenges of scheduling resources and his
experience using

AuditNet Adds
New Search Technology
After repeated problems with the AuditNet site search engine
I decided to try some new alternatives. I incorporated
Searchbutton.com and the AuditNet Google
Personal Search engine on the AuditNet site. Searchbutton.com provides
powerful search technology and reporting that should improve
searching the AuditNet site. I would appreciate any feedback on
these new search alternatives.
Illegal and unauthorised software is still a hot topic, not very
well
managed, and is one of the most underdone areas in terms of tools and
services available for organisations to help them MINIMISE their level
of
risk. Add to this problems created by downloaded picture and sound
files and
the risk expand very rapidly.
This section represents only the additions and changes to Kaplan's
AuditNet Resource List (KARL) for last month. Regular users of KARL
should check this section for updates to previous postings and new
