Audit Compliance With Software License
Agreements
AuditNet welcomes an article or audit tool each month from Andersen's KnowledgeSpace. KnowledgeSpace is a
subscription-based web site that provides, tools, resources and best
practices to help internal auditors save time, manage risk, and add
value. For more information go to www.knowledgespace.com
The latest contribution is an article on auditing compliance with
software license agreements. Compliance with software licensing
agreements may not be one of those topics that companies are overly
concerned about. But in the current economic environment, perhaps they
should be. Software vendors, squeezed for new revenues, have stepped
up their audits to ensure that companies are not using unlicensed
software.

AUDITNET ADDS SECTION ON SAP AUDITING
AuditNet added a new section devoted to
auditors operating in an SAP environment. Thanks to Philip Moulton for

DataCheck: the New Kid on the Block:
The use of computer assisted audit tools and techniques or CAATTs
is now commonplace in many internal audit offices. Where several years
ago the use of CAATTs was optional, the increase in digital data
storage within organizations has caused audit shops, large and small,
to look to these methodologies for data extraction, audit examination
and reconciliation. For the full review of DataCheck click here.

Review
Auditing in a Computerised
Environment
by: Mohan Bhatia
This book’s purpose is to provide a solid foundation for the
study of auditing in a computerized environment within a higher
education environment.Auditing
in a Computerised Environment provides information on just about
everything under this topic.There
are numerous lists that provide good points of current information on
control and auditing issues.
We are always looking to expand the horizon of
resources available for internal auditors. The following pages are now
under construction and available for review and comments. Please visit
them and if you have suggestions, additions or comments please share
them with us by sending an email to editor@auditnet.org.
If you would like additional sections for an area that you have an
interest in, please consider offering yourself as a AuditNet
coordinator.
AuditNet includes a section for new (and seasoned)
auditors detailing the audit process using a step-by-step approach.
The section is under construction and includes templates, sample documents, flowcharts and
links to other resources. I remember (vaguely) what it was like when I
started out in the audit profession. I would have readily embraced an
online resource that guided me into new and unfamiliar territories. Unfortunately the Internet was not an option then so I had to turn to
peers, books, and a lot of internal and external training. The
success of these pages will rely on the philosophy of Auditors Sharing
Knowledge (ASK) for Progress and grow as more seasoned auditors
contribute and find value in educating others in their own best and
continuing practices!
Go the Virtual
Library page for the beginnings of this new resource.
Do You Use AutoAudit?
If you do AuditNet is looking for articles on how you are using the
software in your office. Please send your short article or tip on
automating the audit process to editor@auditnet.org
AutoAudit takes the
"paper" out of paperwork for HUD Inspector General.
The Office of Inspector General at the Department of Housing and
Urban Development implemented AutoAudit software to assist its 300
auditors in transforming the OIG office into a paperless environment.
The HUD audit staff conducts 160 audits each year creating an average
of 3,600 pages of information per audit. Adding to the challenge is
the fact that the HUD audit staff is distributed across the country,
working out of more than 15 local and district offices as well as the
headquarters in Washington, DC.
The following information and links to articles was
recently shared by PC Profile. Check them out!
Your current PC based system isn't a patch on what it used
to be .........!
Your software audit results MAY BE CORRUPTED!
This information may affect all those who are RELYING on
the information provided to audit their systems as a means of
proving they are software compliant. Some may have already
started seeing unusual audit results not expected at desktop
level or may have jumped already to wrong conclusions!
What needs to be understood is that Microsoft has now made
it exceedingly difficult to tell you what is installed on your
systems due to the application of further patches and fixes
derived via Update Now or downloads
from their web site.
New
Opportunities for Vendor and Consultant Listings in AuditNet
Vendors of audit related goods and services now have

new fee-based service provides an opportunity for consultants and
vendors to purchase a listing for the most widely distributed list of
audit resources on the Internet. Paid listings will include a $
designation to distinguish them from sites that include free resources
for auditors. For more information send an email to editor@auditnet.org.

This column is proving to be a great resource
for auditors looking for answers to questions. Previous questions
asked are organized in archives for audit programs, best practices,
audit standards, how do I, and miscellaneous. Look there and
if your question has not been asked before give the ATNA (Ask the
'Net Auditor) forum a try. Send your question along with a
contribution of an audit work program, ICQ, checklist, or other
audit resource and the audit gurus at AuditNet will try to answer
the query to the best of their ability. No guarantees but with the
Internet at our side we do a pretty good job!
We also encourage AuditNet users to
review questions posed that are still pending answers. If you have
an answer to a question please share it. This will also entitle
you to ask a question without having to share a resource!

Productivity
Tip
The
Value of
Professional
Conferences
Recently I attended the Institute of Internal
Auditors International Conference in Washington, D.C. The conference
provided an opportunity to meet many individuals that I have
corresponded with over via email face to face. It was gratifying to
find that so many individuals around the world continue to
participate in the digital audit experience. While communicating via
email is efficient and effective there is something about shaking
someone's hand and talking to them without a computer that is
irreplaceable. For this reason alone, I find the value of
professional conferences and training seminars to rate high on my
list when planning CPE each year. Talking and networking with other
auditors brings home the fact that no matter what industry we work
in, we are all in the same business. Highlighted by the recent
events of Enron and Worldcom auditors from around the world realized
the importance of ethics and corporate governance in our fragile
global economy. Another aspect of the conference is the vendor
exhibits where auditors have an opportunity to view new productivity
software and talk to the people that help us make our jobs a little
easier. All of AuditNet's sponsors exhibited at the Conference and
enjoyed the experience of meeting their customers many of whom are
AuditNet users.
The next time you receive a
brochure or conference announcement, consider investing in yourself
and your profession! I assure you that the experience will be
worthwhile and one that you will want to repeat. Talk to people. You
will find that we all share common goals as audit professionals.
Exchange business cards and establish professional relationships. It
will help both you and the organization you work for. A little
investment in time and money can help make your auditing career very
fulfilling.

has helped me to understand what an auditor's job entails. After
reading this info, I have a better idea of what I'm getting into,

CAREER
TIPS FOR AUDITORS
The Real Scoop
on Job Leads
by Robbie Miller Kaplan
Did you know that newspaper employment advertisements and online
job listing sources are the most frequently used by individuals
seeking employment? If you want to bypass the competition and find a
rich source of job openings, you'll need to develop networking
strategies. The following suggestions will help you access networking
as a key job search tool:
As simplistic as it sounds, tell everyone you know that you are
looking for a job. The most unlikely contacts may put you in touch
with wonderful opportunities.
Join a professional organization, volunteer for a committee, and
participate. People who know you and your skills are more likely
to go the extra mile in recommending you for openings.
Attend workshops, conferences, seminars, training programs, and
other special professional events. Every contact expands your
network.
Be receptive to the needs of other professionals and help
whenever you can. Networking is a two-way street.
Stay visible and keep in touch with your network through written
correspondence, telephone calls, or electronic mail.
Take the initiative to schedule meetings, coffee, or meals with
individuals in your network.
Keep a positive attitude when dealing with others despite job
search setbacks or disappointments. Use a trusted relative or
friend rather than your business contacts to vent your job search
blues.
Show appreciation for any help you have received and always
update your network on your job search success.
Each month the AuditNet Resource Newsletter includes a
career-related tip from Robbie Miller Kaplan, author of How
to Say It in Your Job Search.

What's
Coming?
AuditNet introduced the Flowcharting Guide for Auditors and
Documenting Spreadsheets this month. We will be adding new
guides such as Manager's Internal Control Guide, Statistical
Sampling, Fraud Guide, and more.
Web Site Awards
AuditNet will begin identifying Web sites for
auditors that stand out from the rest. If you think your company
Web site is a cut above the rest send your nominations to
editor@auditnet.org
Internet Based Electronic Audit Management
AuditNet is looking for organizations that are integrating
the Internet into the audit management process. Some U.S.
federal agencies have implemented this and we would like to
share their experiences. The combination of using the Internet
as well as intranets make this concept a reality. Watch for more
on this subject.
Excel is the spreadsheet of choice for many auditors. If you have favorite tips
and techniques for auditors using Excel send them along to editor@auditnet.org
for inclusion in this new section of AuditNet!
AuditNet will be reviewing books of interest to
internal auditors from popular publishers. If you have a book you
would like to see reviewed let the editor know by sending an email to editor@auditnet.org.
If you would like to be a book reviewer send an email to editor@auditnet.org.
The Guide for Preparing, Documenting, and
Referencing Spreadsheets based on a 1987 guide produced by the
U.S. General Accounting Office will be posted shortly. The guide will include a
template that auditors can use to standardize spreadsheets and
provide for adequate workpaper documentation.
Archives of Posted Messages
Many times auditors want to see what messages were
posted to the list to see if their question can
be answered there. Also new subscribers have an opportunity to
review the archives as another research resource. AuditNet uses a public archive service for both
Audit-l and AuditPrograms-l. The URL's to reach these archives is
as follows.
Looking for an audit job? Go to AuditNet's Audit Jobs

can also post your resume, apply for open jobs, research companies and
obtain career advice. If you are in the market for a new job, make
AuditNet your first stop to check out what's available.
This is just another benefit of using AuditNet as your one stop
shop for all your audit and career resources.

Auditing AuditNet: A
Historical Perspective and The Stats
Just
how big is AuditNet and what statistics do you have to support
your claims? When I began building AuditNet, I maintained
that if I built it auditors would come. What started in
August 1994 as a one page list of 10 resources has mushroomed
into the oldest and most comprehensive free site for the global
audit community. While I have been reluctant to provide numbers
because, in my opinion, outcomes are what counts, I have decided
to play the numbers game and provide the information for the
curious. There are a number of statistics that I gather on a
monthly basis. The following statistics are as of April 30,
2002:
AuditNet-l subscribers 5,050
AuditPrograms-l discussion list subscribers 684
Audit-l discussion list subscribers 364
Total resources in KARL - 1,261
Number of pages in KARL- 111
Number of audit programs in the inventory (464):
In addition, the following information comes
from the June 2002 Web Trends report. Each month I generate
a report that provides this information and much more. The
statistics provided help manage the site. If you
are interested in reviewing the reports, they are available at www.auditnet.org/report.
While all these numbers may interest the curious
few the bottom line is that AuditNet is dedicated to maintaining
and providing this clearinghouse of information for the benefit
of the global audit community. I am constantly asked by
auditors how they can help in this effort. My response is to
contribute and share in AuditNet's philosophy of Auditors
Sharing Knowledge (ASK) for Progress.
