When Every Space Counts!

Despite differences in credentials, experience, and accomplishments, your resume has something in common with every other resume; your personal history must fit on one to two pages. How you use this space determines your résumé’s destiny; whether it sparks a hiring manager’s interest or finds its way into the discard pile.

Preetinder can quickly capture coveted space by changing margins to one-inch on top, bottom, and sides and placing bullets flush to margins. Better maximize the upper half of page one, currently devoted to professional profile and skills summary, by integrating these two sections into one that highlights the most desirable qualifications. Search out and delete space wasters, such as the headings “Curriculum Vitae” and “Span of Control.”

Resumes must be edited down to the most relevant experience, education, training, and credentials that demonstrate the pertinent requirements for desired jobs. Preetinder should re-write experience statements that read like a job description; employers want to know what you offer them by way of experience and accomplishments. What problems were solved, under what circumstances, and what was accomplished? Additionally, make the descriptions interesting by detailing the industries, types of organizations, range of sizes, and reasons for complexity. In addition, determine whether concurrent experiences and volunteer activities make for a more qualified candidate.

As in all accounting and auditing resumes, watch for redundancies; either group activities into a more expansive bullet or use a thesaurus or synonym dictionary to replace overused words. Select from a range of action verbs, such as: prepared, developed, devised, executed, delivered, broadened, enhanced, improved, maximized, conducted, provided, disclosed, strengthened, reported, reviewed, audited, established, identified, briefed, and disclosed.

Lastly, use types of fonts and sizes to lay your text out on the page. 12-point is appropriate for headings and sections and 11- to 12-point is fine for all other text.
