The Control and Security of E-Commerce

E-commerce and the value of the Internet have finally entered the mainstream. Gordon E. Smith, author and President of Canaudit, Inc. an audit, training and consulting firm has hit a “home run” with this new book. The Control and Security of E-Commerce provides a step-by-step approach to auditing and securing the E-commerce environment. The book starts with a brief overview of the concepts, risks and benefits involved in electronic commerce. It continues with coverage of the E-commerce information security issues, protecting the environment (Internet, Extranet, and Intranet) business continuity and finally protecting the data. Gordon deals with each of the subject in a straight forward manner that auditors that do not consider themselves savvy in this new technological area will appreciate. As a true believer in “take home value” or information that you can put to use right away the author adds checklists and control tables at the end of each chapter. He ends with a compiles version of all the chapter checklists resulting in a sales and invoicing function audit guide that can jump start a project review of E-Commerce. There are several references to Web sites in the book as well as an online site for the book where you can download electronic copies of the checklists and audit guide.

If you haven’t audited this area already you will at some point in the near future. This book is a definite recommended buy for your department professional library. If you have audited this area then you need to have this book to make sure that you covered all the areas recommended, especially a review of the legal issues which the author feels strongly is the first step in auditing E-commerce.
