One of the most powerful features of data analysis software is scripting or the ability to automate standard routines for audit related tasks. In my way of thinking automated audit software routines increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the audit function and maximize the true power of data analysis. Building on top of the work of others rather than tearing down and rebuilding will extend the reach of internal auditors much quicker.
In the past auditors had limited options to learn and hone the skills of scripting. They could take a training class from a software vendor or they could DIY (do it yourself) sometimes called self-learning or the on the job training. The first option can be cost prohibitive for many audit departments and the latter option can be hampered by learning bad habits or doing it the wrong way through trial and error. The section on performing data analysis tasks is especially helpful in having auditors understand the terminology and ways that they can use scripting on audit projects. All you need to access the Website is the password however you will have to buy the book for that information!
