Maximizing Microsoft Excel 2007 / 2010 as a Data Analysis Audit Tool

November 16, 2011

(2 CPEs) $89

Note: This webinar will be split into the following three topics:

  1. Applying Data Magic and Other Excel Alchemy

Data magic seems to appear when millions of dollars are revealed in potential recoveries.  Learn about useful tests in the areas of accounts payable, contract auditing, payroll, and general ledger using Microsoft Excel.  Specific learning objectives include:

  • Learn specific data analysis tests to query and mine data for gold in the areas of accounts payable, general ledger,  contract auditing, and health benefit reviews using the most common data analysis tools.
  • Obtain a list of minimum suggested reports to run on a periodic basis to improve any business process function.
  • Be able to operate a Pivot Table template with your own accounts payable data to provide audit-report ready analysis.
  1. Risk Ranking Your Spreadsheets and Auditing with Excel

Excel has permeated all of our business processes as it provides a flexible and simple-to-create development platform.   However, the mini-systems built in Excel can be rife with errors given the lack of software methodology, poor security, and ease-of-change that comes with the Excel territory.  Specific learning objectives include:

  • Learn to risk assess an entire population of Excel spreadsheets in minutes using automated tools (provided in the webinar).
  • Adopt a consistent methodology for scoring spreadsheets based on their impact and likelihood for failure.
  • Spot the top areas of risk within spreadsheets based on past case studies of failure.
  1. Graphing for Auditors

Finding errors, inefficiencies, and fraud is largely about understanding patterns, and making exceptions to those patterns stand out. Statistical analysis is an essential tool in that process. Another essential tool is graphing. In this course, you’ll learn how to translate unwieldy files of financial data, with tens of thousands of transactions ranging from $1 to $10 million, into a single compact scattergraph, pie chart, or overlay—and then to pick out the key items that merit sampling and follow-up.  Specific learning objectives include:

  • Understand the numerous Graph types and their different analytical strengths.
  • Be able to operate a graph template for creating numerous audit-report ready presentations of payables, general ledger, and payroll data.
  • Learning why financial data poses special statistical challenges for graphing purposes
